Newington Schoolhouse Quilters, Newington

Contact person: Pat Kepler  860-633-2811

Meetings are held at 7 PM on the 1st Mon of the month @ Northeast Utilities on the Berlin Turnpike, Newington.

Newington Schoolhouse Quilters was well represented among the prize-winners at the Berlin Fair. Diane Leeman won first place for her embroidered entry Bounties of Love. This lovely piece went on to win Best in Show for the embroidery class. Diane’s machine quilted entry took second in that class. Diane Jacobson’s multi-colored geometric wall hanging took a first-place ribbon.

Carol Peterson also received first-place ribbons for both her Halloween quilt "Boo" and her batik purse Big Curvy Bag. Carol also received second place for her rag quilt Cozy.

Jeannie Sinkiewicz also did very well at the fair: she won second-place ribbons for both her embroidered piece Snowman and her three-dimensional turkey wall hanging, as well as third-place ribbons for both her Turkeys table runner and her pieced mariner’s compass. In the recycling class, Jeannie’ zipped tote, using the bags for 1 pound of ground coffee from Dunkin Donuts took first place.

Marlene Shea has also received several awards for her quilts Sweet Remembrance and Forever Blooming. See photos of these quilts in the GHQG Showcase in this issue. In addition, the American Quilting Society is using Marlene’s prize-winning quilt Sunflower Serenade (shown in Feb 2011 Basting Lines) in their full-page magazine ads.

We had a very successful planning meeting in September. Our October meeting was the always popular "Four Corners," with four members sharing different techniques with our membership. In November, Jo Hansling will present "Remnants of the Past, Pieces for the Future," a program regarding quilts made during the depression era. December will be our Holiday Potluck Dinner.
